Dogfish Head “Squall IPA” Review (#119)

Dogfish Head
“Squall IPA”
Milton, DE

From The Brewery

An unfiltered, 100% bottle-conditioned, super-pungent imperial I.P.A. clocking in at 9% ABV and dry-hopped with Palisade, Amarillo, Simcoe, Cascade, CTZ, and Willamette hops.

ABV: 9%

Review

Appearance: The beer poured a beautiful hazy orange-yellow, with a thick, chunky, light, white, head. Lacing was high, and head retention was solid and easily brought back with a swirl of the glass.

Smell: Sweet lightly toasted malts, with bold floral and citrus hops. Strong smelling; nice balanced, but still hop forward.

Taste: Full flavored: floral and citrus hop up front, followed by a residual semi sweet to toasted malt finish. Nice orange zest along with a mild honey sweetness to it. Very balanced. Not as sweet as the regular DFH 90 Minute, and for that, I like this one a great deal.

Mouthfeel: Full, creamy smooth; bottle conditioning shines through nicely and the beers weight shifts forward a bit more without the astringent sweetness I sometimes find in the 90.

Drinkability: High

Notes: A great beer. I have read some people call this beer more of a gimmick than something new. This is a remastered version of the 90. Its like 2 different brewers took the same recipe and went with two different endings for it. I wish this was available in a 6 pack.
