F.X. Matt Brewery “Saranac Lake Effect Lager” Review (#116)

F.X. Matt Brewery
“Saranac Lake Effect Lager”
Utica, NY

From The Brewery

Our Saranac Lake Effect Lager is a rich, malty, old school German lager, made with traditional German malts and hops and fermented with a lager yeast. Look for a rich but smooth malty taste, balanced by an impressive Hallertau hopping-A nice reward for enduring our winter months.

Beer Style: German Style Lager
Malt Selections: Pilsener, Kiln Coffee Malt
Hop Selections: Perle, Hallertau
Color: Deep Amber
Mouthfeel / Body: Full
Original Gravity: 16.5

Appearance: It poured a vibrant nut brown – very clear and clean lager with a thin head with surprisingly high lacing.

Smell: Toasty caramel malts with a light dose of German hops wrapped up in package of lager yeast.

Taste: Very parallel to the smell; full flavored and enjoyable. Builds nicely over the beer; yeast esters come through more at slightly higher temperatures.

Mouthfeel: Full bodied with good weight.

Drinkability: Medium – one is very smooth, but can get heavy.

Notes: A surprisingly good lager – smooth, drinkable, and full flavored.
