Lagunitas “Hop Stoopid Ale” Review (#062)

Lagunitas Hop Stoopid

Lagunitas Brewing Co.
“Hop Stoopid”
Petaluma, California

From The Brewery:

For those mornings when you have to cut right to the chase, this is the one. Sure to blast through just about anything still lingering from the night before, this mouthful of Hops and huge rich Malt has a gaurantee built right into the name!

ABV: 8%
IBUs: 102

Appearance:I poured a serving into a tulip glass, releasing the golden yellow, white topped beer. It looked clear and viscous.

Smell:Fruity hops all over the place. You can smell this from arms length away. Piney and citrus – bit grapefruit, some apricot and a whole bunch of flowers. Very sweet with a little bit of malt, but it is called Hop Stoopid for a reason.

Taste: Potent! Full barrage of hops – very West Coast with grapefruit, pineapple and peach. A pinch of pine and more floral hops. 102 IBUs this is. The taste lingers for a long time; the malt is there, but more as a solid supporting role. The hops keep changing with every sip, and different floral notes pop up.

Mouthfeel:Heavy and coating on the palate; medium carbonation and drying sweet finish.

Drinkability/Palitability:Surprisingly high for 102 IBUs. Very refreshing on a warm summer night.

Notes:This is the second time trying this beer for me. I had the first bottle while living in Florida, and I do not know what made a difference, but this bottle was much more enjoyable and drinkable. I remember it having a stickier mouthfeel – not in a good way – as well as being much less drinkable. This is a great beer, that I am not only happy I was able to try it again, but also that I waited to review this bottle. Maybe it aged a little longer, but it was spot on.
