Flying Dog “Raging Bitch” Review (#032)

Flying Dog Brewery
Raging Bitch Belgian IPA
Frederick, Maryland

From The Brewery:

Bitches come in a variety of forms, but there’s never been something as sassy as Flying Dog’s Raging Bitch Belgian IPA. An American IPA augmented with Belgian yeast, our 20th anniversary beer jumps out of the glass and nips at your taste buds with its delicate hop bitterness. At 8.3% ABV, this bitch is dangerously drinkable.

ABV: 8.3%
IBU’s: 60
Plato: 18
Specialty Malts: 60L Crystal
Hops: Warrior, Columbus, Amarillo
Process: El Diablo yeast used to give Raging Bitch a trademark Belgian-style taste, dry hopped with Amarillos

“Two inflammatory words… one wild drink. Nectar imprisoned in a bottle. Let it out. It is cruel to keep a wild animal locked up. Uncap it. Release it….stand back!! Wallow in its golden glow in a glass beneath a white foaming head. Remember, enjoying a RAGING BITCH, unleashed, untamed, unbridled- and in heat- is pure GONZO!! It has taken 20 years to get from there to here. Enjoy!”

Appearance: I poured this beer out of a bottle into a pint glass, filling it with this golden burnt orange ale with huge chunky head.

Smell: Amazing! Big hop up front, floral, letting you know it is an India Pale Ale, followed by a solid Belgian yeast spice. Very complex and inviting.

Taste: As any beer should be, it tastes as good as it smells. It pairs the hop trio perfectly with their yeast characteristic and finish – nutty, earthy and lemony.

Mouthfeel: Creamy and refreshing, with a drying finish that makes you want more; the head retention maintained mouthfeel through the whole beer.

Drinkability: This is a big bold badass beer that will slap you if you don’t watch yourself. It is fierce at 8.3%ABV and every sip you take makes you want another.

Notes: I, nor Brett who I drank this with as we brewed a Pale Ale, can say a single bad thing about it. I follow Flying Dog on Twitter, they were posting like mad as they brewed, bottled and shipped this beer. And I wanted a pint of it every time they posted, and after all of that, it lived up to its hype. Great beer.
